Synthetic Grass Maintenance

Maintaining SG

Maintaining Your Synthetic Grass at Home

In comparison to real grass, synthetic grass is a breeze to maintain and is virtually worry free. Upon completion of the installation, homeowners need not worry about mowing, constant watering or fertilizing of their lawns. While synthetic grass is easy to maintain, it’s not completely maintenance free. A little bit of attention will help to maximize the life expectancy of your lawn.

Keeping your lawn free of debris

Removing debris and inspecting high traffic areas for flattened fibres is a great way to keep your synthetic grass looking pristine. An occasional brooming also helps to fluff up high traffic areas. Regularly remove any fallen leaves using a leaf blower, stiff brush or a plastic rake. In order to lessen the load of leaves falling, it’s also advisable to trim back any overgrown trees or hedges.

Cleaning your synthetic grass

If you live in an area where it rains periodically, this should eliminate the need for rinsing off any dust or loose soil from the synthetic turf. However, if your climate is much drier you may find yourself having to hose down your synthetic grass in order to reduce dust from accumulating. Occasional watering also helps your synthetic grass stay cooler. With higher humidity levels, synthetic turf can retain too much heat and become very hot. You can clean and cool off in one step by using a hose, a gentle dish detergent and a stiff brush for cleaning.

Because the surface is susceptible to airborne seeds, soaking your lawn with an application of weed killer bi-yearly is very important. Weeds normally do not poke through the backing of your synthetic turf, but sometimes seeds can germinate inside the sand or rubber infill that lay on the top of synthetic grass. If this happens, they can easily be removed by spraying or pulling them just as you would in a normal grass lawn.

Consider using turf deodoriser

If you have a synthetic lawn that doesn’t have treated antimicrobial fibres, you may want to consider using a turf deodoriser if you own a pet to eliminate any potential odours from urine-soaked infill.

Avoiding sharp garden furniture

Sharp furniture can damage the tufted material of synthetic grass. Make sure you furniture doesn’t have any sharp edges that could pull or tear your newly installed synthetic turf.

When it comes to lawn care, synthetic grass maintenance is very easy. Mundane chores such as thatching and aerating are a thing of the past. Time is a precious resource, so why spend it breaking your back taking care of it.
